Falls from height have represented 5% of the number of claims and 7% of the cost of claims to Victoria’s work cover insurance scheme from 1985 through 2004 (Source - Statistical Summary 2003/2004). The differential in percentage between number and value of claims indicates the seriousness of injuries sustained through fall from height injuries in comparison to other work related injuries. Working at heights is dangerous. During 2003, 16 people fell to their deaths on sites in Australia and New Zealand, many more suffered serious injuries as a result of a fall from heights.
